Outdoor Lighting Renovation

Your enjoyment of the backyard any time of the year will be extended by cleverly positioned exterior lighting. The correct lighting will let the kids play outside longer, help you find your way along a path, and enjoy a leisurely barbecue. Here are a few things to consider when renovating the lighting in your backyard:

  • Safety it’s important to light the areas that could be dangerous. Path and step lights should be placed low to the ground. They should have enough illumination to prevent trips or falls. They can be free-standing, wall mounted or be a rope of lights to outline a path.Front door lights should be a little brighter than surrounding areas for safety both and convenience. It’s important to not trip over steps, doorways or mats, and be able to see your keys clearly. Place the light above head height with enough spill to illuminate the entire area.
  • Powering your lights A lot of garden lights today are low voltage or either 12 or 24 volts. Wiring for the lights is connected to a mains powered transformer. They are safe to install yourself, and harmless should a wire be accidentally cut.
  • Solar lighting These are powered by battery, and they can be used in multiple positions. They can be used to light a path, highlight a feature or be scattered throughout the garden. Position them in a spot where they are in sunlight during the day. The in-built battery can then store a charge. They turn on automatically when it gets dark, and shine for up to 10 hours.
  • Ground lights These are recessed lights in the ground with the light pointing upward. They work well positioned on the edge or in the middle of a path, in marking the edge of a deck, or outlining the shape of a lawn. You can them at the bottom of a tree creates a wonderful highlight and focal point of the garden.
  • Wall lights You can find a wide variety of styles in wall lights from modern, minimalist black boxes to antique-looking carriage lights. They can be used to create an ambient wash of light, to brighten eating, or to highlight doorways. The key is to make it light enough to eat without making guests feel like they have been caught in a spotlight if they are placed over an outdoor dining table. It’s better to add to the illumination with table lights and candles while having the overhead lights a little dimmer than needed. Some varieties of wall lights come with an attached hood for reducing glare. They also come in a variety of materials. If you’re looking for something that will last a long time, marine-grade stainless steel is the most hard wearing. If you live near the coast, having hoods made of marine-grade stainless steel is always the best option.

Whatever purpose you want your outdoor lights to serve, you can find a wide verity or styles to choose from.
