Renovating your Floors with TileWhether you prefer contemporary porcelain, stylish ceramics or modern mosaics contemporary tiles can make a big impact to any room. It has a virtual unlimited choice in colors, textures, styles and sizes, floor tiles and adds beauty and individuality throughout the house.

There are many different types of tile on the market today. Here are a few choices you have to pick from:

  • Ceramic

Ceramic tile is made from unglazed clay. These tiles range in size from tiny mosaics to oversized slabs. Ceramic tiles are often used where an indoor area flows to an outdoor zone. Ceramic tiles are slippery when wet, so it’s important to make sure you purchase a non-slip variety to use as floor tiles. They come in a wide variety of designs, colors, and textures.

  • Porcelain

When they make this type of tile, the porcelain tiles are fired in a kiln to produce a versatile and strong product. Glazed porcelain tiles have a polished finished and have a color bonded to the surface.

If you buy porcelain tiles that are unglazed, their color runs right through the tile. This can be an advantage, because the imperfection will not show if the tile becomes chipped.

A quality porcelain tile is harder than natural stone and will maintain its finish over time. With today’s technology, porcelain tiles can be manufactured to look like any surface from wood and marble to leather. This makes them a very flexible product.

  • Natural stone

There are so many options available in natural stone including: Basalt, marble, limestone, slate, granite, and marble. They are quarried, which means cut and finished to highlight their natural hue. They can be textured from highly polished to a rough, natural feel. Natural stone is porous. It needs to be sealed to make it water resistant. Over time, as it gains in patina, the appearance changes slightly.

  • Sizing

One of the best-selling sizes for tiles is 30cm x 60cm. Larger tiles, have been popping up on the renovation scene. It’s possible to purchase tiles up to 1000mm x 1000mm, and in some cases, even larger. The larger sizes are great because they require less grout, and the larger format helps to open up any space. One added incentive, especially for a busy bathroom, is that they’re also easier to clean.

  • Grout

The old grout of yesterday was only available in white. In today’s market, a contemporary trend is grout in a full range of colors. They are available to make matching grout and tile even easier. If you want white, it’s better to go with off white than brilliant white, because all grout darkens over time. Generally speaking, however, the darker the grout, the better.

  • Trends

Tiling the floor and walls of a room in tiles of the same size and color is one of the big trends at the moment . This can make a room feel larger, because it blurs the boundaries.

In the bathroom, another popular is to tile the floor of the bathroom and then carry it up one wall as a dramatic feature. Without breaking your budget, this is an easy way to create a strong focal point in your room.
