Simple Ideas and Solutions to Make an Ordinary Home into an Extraordinary HomeWhether you just want a better living space, or you are planning to sell your home, there are a few ways to make your home an extraordinary one. Here are a few of them:

  • Candles or lamps placed in strategic places, give a warm, soft glow that can bring out everyone’s inner beauty.
  • Select bedding carefully. Make sure your sheets are made from the most hypo-allergenic material available. Cotton “breathes” and absorbs sweat and still remain dry to touch.
  • Paint instantly transforms a room. It is also inexpensive. Use soft, subtle color schemes. Low-VOC and breathe-easy paints are safer if you’re asthmatic or have children.
  • Use flexible furniture such as side tables that can be used as television stands or sofas that change into spare beds.
  • Make your home clutter free.
  • Roman blinds are a light and easy way to keep warmth in for the winter, and heat out during the summer.
  • Install insulation in the ceiling. It doesn’t alter the appearance, but it gives you comfort by being warmer in winter and cooler in summer.
  • Mirrors can be used to make a room seem brighter. You can hang them opposite the window to increase the natural light in a room.
  • Spend more on flooring materials designed to last. It can be cheaper in the long run. Natural materials such as timber and stone may cost more, but can take a lot of wear with little maintenance.
  • You get what you pay for with large furniture like couches if they have modular sections.
  • Use clear storage boxes so you can see inside without having to rummage through things.
  • Put new door and drawer handles for an inexpensive quick fix in your kitchen.
  • Replace your faucets with low-flow heads that cut water consumption and reduce bills.
  • Investing in down-light conversion kits from Neco that use 30 per cent less energy.
  • Use a console table in a narrow hallway, for mail, keys and handbags.
  • To create the illusion of more width in narrow halls, use horizontally striped rugs.
  • Increase your storage space by using slide-out pantries and cupboards. They cost more, but can double your space.
  • Use benches rather than heavy dining chairs to save and create circulation space.
  • To flush your home with freshly circulating air and keep the interiors smell naturally clean, open your doors and windows for an hour a week.
  • Enhance your bathroom by using new matching accessories, hooks and towel rails.
  • Add draught excluders on the bottom of doors and insulation tape around windows to help insulate.
  • Old refrigerators or freezers that are kept in garages not only use more electricity to run, but spew unnecessary carbon into the atmosphere.

Everyone wants a home they can be proud of. By following these simple guidelines, you can transform your home into one you can show with pride.
